Everyone has to sacrifice something. Playing the game the right way will get you a lot farther than trying to do things you can’t or don’t help your team win. That type of influence has been invaluable to me.” Flagg could only lean back and pop a smile as Love described watching Boston’s outlet drill which kickstarted an elite transition offense. Of course, the Celtics could play defense too with a massive back-line featuring some combination of Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Larry Bird and Walton. Flagg hopes to recreate that style of basketball at Duke this winter. Jon Scheyer has a team fresh out of the incubator. Duke’s starting backcourt of Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are the lone returners. Flagg is the big name, but Duke has a whopping 10 newcomers. On paper, Duke has a chance to be one of the best defensive teams in the country. But getting that many fresh faces to gel defensively isn’t easy. Still, the defensive upside for this group is off the charts. Freshman center Khaman Maluach is enormous, checking in at 7-foot-2 and 250 pounds. Duke added Syracuse transfer Maliq Brown, one of the ACC’s best defenders last season. Proctor is a hellacious on-ball defender, and ripply Tulane transfer Sion James is a menace on that end, too. Duke could trot out a starting lineup with Foster, a ho-hum, 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard, being the smallest player on the floor. Flagg is at the epicenter of all of it. He’s regarded as one of the best defensive prospects high school basketball has ever seen. He’s 6-foot-9, 200 pounds and the queen on the chess board with his ability to guard up and down the lineup and offer elite secondary rim protection. Maybe most importantly, being special defensive is of utmost importance to Flagg. He lights up describing just what Duke could be on that end of the floor. “We have so many versatile guys defensively,” Flagg says. “We have such a tall lineup. That doesn’t mean we’re not quick also. We have big guards who can sit down and guard small guards. We’re going to be so versatile in the way we defend. We’ll be able to pick our spots and pick our coverage on the way we guard. I think we can be very tactical with the way we guard this year. I’m so excited to get this going.” The game has changed and Flagg’s ability to guard everybody defensively and pass, dribble and shoot exemplifies it.  “For us, it was power forwards, small forwards and point guards,” Love said. “Now, guys are just like switching 1-through-5 and do everything and play every position. People like to say the word ‘unicorn’ but you’re seeing that. The game is positionless, and we didn’t have that in the past. I think that’s a beautiful thing. It speaks to the skill work. You’re never too good to not have to work on your skills and work on literally everything.  “Looking back at grassroots basketball and AAU, in hindsight, whether it’s coaches or the entire ecosystem, I wish we would’ve focused a lot more on skill work. You watch the European influence and how much better the European game has gotten, they don’t give a shit about rankings. They care about getting better. They care about skill work. They play two games a week. We were playing three games on Thursday, three games on Friday, four games on Saturday and sometimes five games on Sunday. That’s too much. I’m not going to say I felt like I left some things on the table in my career, but hindsight you think is 20/20. I wish the skill work and being hungrier to have more games would’ve been paramount. It’s like going to a good vacation. You leave wanting more. I wish that was what we had.” Flagg and Love have already gone their separate ways. Love is heading back to Miami to be Bam Adebayo’s backup big man which he describes as “the best job in the world.” For Flagg, he’s itching for a bit of normalcy after the pomp and circumstance of the ESPYs in Los Angeles, competing against the best of the best in Las Vegas and, of course, his summer responsibilities at Duke. That’s a lot of flights. But he’s got one more that he’s cherishing on tap. Next month, Flagg will return home to host a basketball camp at the University of Maine (a place his old Nokomis High School coach Earl Anderson wanted him to go to for a year). Flagg and his brother, Ace, will lead the camp for boys and girls from first grade to sixth grade. The first session sold out so quickly and there was such a big interest that they had to create a second session. That off-court work is a big piece of why Gatorade selected Flagg as its Player of the Year. “It means everything to me,” Flagg says. “Coming from a small town, knowing everybody. Having a very tight circle. We call it our village back home. Just having that support system from a young age. Being tight-knit, close to all my people has helped my people through this process so much, so I’m really excited to go home and do something for the younger generation and pay it back. I’m excited for the opportunity to be home for a little bit.” It’ll be a well-deserved, short break. Maybe Flagg can sneak his way onto the golf course again with his mentor and former AAU coach, Andy Bedard. But the spotlight isn’t leaving Flagg anytime soon. Duke’s season will be here before he knows it. The 2025 NBA Draft is less than a year away. Flagg’s hopeful he won’t have to wait long to hear his name called, and Love will be waiting in the NBA when he gets there. “(Kevin Durant), Steph, LeBron are phasing out of their careers in the next few years and the game is in such a good place,” Love said. “Watching how much it changed since 2007 when I was going to UCLA, it’s getting so much better. The talent level domestically and abroad has taken such a leap forward. That’s why the TV deal was $76 billion. Those are absurd numbers. You’re excited for young men like Cooper and Cameron (Boozer) who continue to evolve and take it to the next level.” But is Love the best outlet passer in the game? The defending national champions have the toughest non-conference matchup with Texas visiting Ann Arbor in Week 2. The Wolverines are the welcoming committee for USC and Oregon – who also come to the Big House – and Washington – where the Wolverines travel for a CFP championship rematch. That all leads to the finale at Ohio State. Michigan’s opponents have a combined winning percentage of .624. There are few breaks on this schedule.  The Boilermakers face three top-five teams – Ohio State, Oregon and Notre Dame. At least the only road game of the three is at Ohio State – where Purdue has not won since 2000. The renewal of the rivalry with the Irish is a nice touch. The Boilermakers also play Penn State at home. Wisconsin and Nebraska are unranked for now, but Purdue faces those teams on back-to-back weeks in late September. This just isn’t a friendly schedule for second-year coach Ryan Walters.  USC reportedly tried to back out of the season opener with LSU, and with good reason. Their first run through the Big Ten will be very difficult. A home game against Penn State and road games against Michigan and Washington are part of their first tour, and they maintain the season finale against Notre Dame. MORE: Top 25 coaches for 2024 | Top 25 quarterbacks No Ohio State or Michigan? That’s huge for the Scarlet Knights, who were 1-19 against those schools in the Big Ten East. Losing that divisional tag means Rutgers has just two games against ranked teams, a trip to USC and a home game against Washington. The Scarlet Knights do travel to Virginia Tech in non-conference play, which has potential to get into the Top 25 this season. The Hawkeyes have just two games against teams that are ranked in SN’s Preseason Top 25. That does include a trip to Ohio State – where the Hawkeyes have not won since 1991. Washington is the only other ranked team on the schedule, and the traditional rivalry game with Iowa State is at Kinnick Stadium, too. Don’t be surprised if Kirk Ferentz keeps Iowa in that Big Ten championship hunt.  The Nittany Lions no longer have a protected rival on the schedule, and that will be an advantage. Michigan is not on the schedule this year – a game that was essentially replaced by a trip to USC. The Nittany Lions also get Washington at home. It comes down to Ohio State. James Franklin is 1-9 against the Buckeyes, with the only victory coming in Happy Valley in 2016. A non-conference matchup with West Virginia – who could be ranked in the AP Preseason Top 25 – won’t be easy.  Using that formula, here are the Big Ten schedule rankings for the 2024 season, which includes a look at those games against ranked opponents. We ranked those scheduled from the hardest to easiest:  – Ohio State is 93-7 in Big Ten regular-season play since Urban Meyer took over in 2012 – the best conference winning percentage of any team in the FBS. Can anybody disrupt that with the new schedule? Road trips to Oregon and Penn State are true tests, and the Wolverines are the only ranked team on the home schedule. The Buckeyes have lost two Big Ten home games in that stretch.  – Oregon has the easiest schedule among the new Pac-12 schools in the conference because they have the fewest games against ranked teams, but that might be a glitch. This is tougher than it looks. The in-state game with Oregon State is bumped up to Sept. 14 – and it’s a road game this year. The Beavers will be all-in for an upset. The Oct. 12 matchup with the Buckeyes could be a Big Ten championship preview. The Ducks do have November matchups at Wisconsin and Michigan before a new regular-season finale against Washington.  – Wisconsin is 1-3 against ranked opponents at Camp Randall Stadium the last three seasons. There is a chance for Luke Fickell to reverse that trend against a home schedule that includes Oregon, Alabama and Penn State. The AFL’s influential head of mental health and wellbeing has explained the thinking behind the league’s contentious illicit drugs policy and why the game was committed to an approach of “harm minimisation” with its players.Best porn XXX. She did not provide any data on the rates of drug use among footballers compared to the general population. “So I’ll leave the rules of the game to my esteemed medical colleges,” she said, when asked about the punishment for players whose issues become public. “But I think one of things to remember is … something in the media, if they’re vilified for example, the care placed around that player is immense. “It’s quite remarkable to see the level of support placed around the player. And my team’s role is to reach out and see what we can augment, what we can bolster as well.” Hall said harm minimisation did not just apply to the individual player. “Harms are not just to the individual. Harms are to the team as well, the community itself. So if I think about harm reduction in an absolute holistic sense, and absolutely we have a responsibility for young people and to understand drug-related harms. “And absolutely we have a responsibility to the community to young people to understand drug related harms … we need to be part of that social responsibility to the community. “Harms to me are reputational, are social harms, there’s definitely a role for us to play. It’s a very, very common harm … as is mental health.” Hall would not respond specifically to the tragic deaths of former players Harley Balic and Cam McCarthy, but said the game had a crucial role to play in protecting young people’s mental wellbeing. “I probably won’t respond to either of those directly other than to reiterate that it’s absolutely devastating to have the loss of life associated with any young person. “And sadly, it is something that a lot of families are managing, and our football families are managing as well … We think the power of sport has the ability to protect the mental wellbeing of young people. “Our takeaway from tragedy is that we have a role to play in the prevention and early intervention of young people.” She said it was important to intervene early when a player had issues with mental health and especially substance use, as outcomes could otherwise become “dire”. Hall said the decision to remove weights from club record for 2024 was driven by sports physicians and club dieticians and from the AFL looking at other sports’ best practice. “The initiative itself was driven by sports physicians and sports dieticians within clubs advocating to us as well as us looking at what is best practice in other sports,” said Hall, who added that the AFL’s main focus in the area of “disordered eating” was in the pathways for prospective players in adolescence and teens. “There was some focus on the player weights, it probably is worth noting the way that the way we’ve approached the prevention of disordered eating is quite holistic. So our physique assessment policy within talent pathways was one of those things.” Hall has received some measure of private criticism from clubs – and especially from recruiting circles – in response to the no weights and skinfolds decisions. But she said the AFL had to be guided by expert advice, rather than following “footy culture” – the term this masthead used – in areas impacting players’ mental health. Harley Balic during his time at Melbourne.Credit: Getty Images “I wouldn’t say it’s front of mind,” she said of any potential conflict with footy traditions. “Everything we do and the reason why the decisions we make from a mental health and wellbeing perspective are ones we stand behind is that we don’t do anything from a reactive or whimsical way … everything we do is evidence-informed, and it has to be because this is really serious as an area – to get it wrong, to react to footy culture rather than health policy might inadvertently do harm.” Hall said there was still an issue with players seeing a stigma in seeking mental health. She said players still had access to the mental health network via the AFL Players’ Association and did not endure the lengthy waits that the community had for such services. “Our players still need to overcome a lot of the mental health stigma around accessing support and once accessing and remaining in support over time.” Hall explained the different mental health challenges facing AFL men and AFLW women players thus: “We know that for LGBTIQA+ communities there are – because of their experience of discrimination – there are definitely increased risk factors within those communities So we need to bolster protective factors in those communities. And gender differences are real in mental health. “We usually find that men are less likely to seek help than women but there is a whole lot of other risk factors associated with gender – so while stoicism in men, for example, might be a risk factor, the experience of discrimination in women might be a risk factor.” Crisis support is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.
