Nonprofit Board Orientation

A nonprofit board is a group that oversees your organization’s fiduciary responsibilities and duties, and guides it toward an enduring future. Through the governance and financial management policy, they ensure that your charity is legally and ethically run and has the resources it requires to carry out its mission. They also examine the performance of the executive director along with compensation and other critical management issues.

Nonprofit boards usually include those who have connections to donors and other influential community members and who are passionate about your cause and its goals. You should also look for people who are detail oriented so that they understand how the whole picture is put together and what each department is required to do.

Board members should demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the nonprofit and its missions, and be prepared to devote significant time and effort to meet obligations. In addition, they should be able of clearly articulating the value they add as a trustee and the consequences of their decisions. They should not be prone to gossip or rumor. They should not attempt to gain favor with other trustees or employees by playing the game of favorites.

It is vital that the new board members are aware of their primary duties. Many organizations hold orientation sessions to train new trustees on their fiduciary and legal obligations and other governance practices. They may be led by your executive director or other board members.
